Which PSP should one buy? (on behalf of Rob L)

Verbatim:
Is an import from Japan better. I heard the screens were better.
Does multi-region exist?

And what about the operating system. Earlier versions were reported to lock down any 'wrong' applications.

Is DRM an issue?

And is there a site where all this shit is discussed?
And to buy?

  • No...an import from Japan is not better...possible a tad cheaper if you can get around import duty and VAT! It's apparently impossible to get a UK one at the moment if it wasn't pre-ordered. I've not heard about the screens being better - spec is identical - my UK one certainly looks incredible. There was an issue with the first batch in Japan where the square button was dodgy because of it's close proximity to the screen. Seems to have been fixed now though.

As far as games are concerned, they are all multi-region out of the box.

The region coding for UMD Movies is the same as DVDs, so buying one from Japan should be ok as I believe it is also Region 2.

The latest firmware (2.0) has locked out any homebrew software for the time being. The UK PSPs arrive with 1.5 preinstalled and a disc to install 2.0 (with a note that this MUST be done before anything else!). So you could not do the upgrade if you didn't want to.

In all honesty, version 2.0 adds enough new features to warrant using it. It's added a fairly decent web browser as well as support for a number of extra file formats for audio/video. I'm sure someone somwhere will hack it again so that 'unofficial' software can be run.

DRM...not really sure on this one. I don't think it can't play DRM protected files from iTunes. Not something I've looked into.

  • Nice one.
Any ideas about Mac software for homebrew? Or shifting games from the UMD to stick?

  • The homebrew software itself is neither PC or Mac, so it doesn't matter what you have.

Nullriver make a nice bit of sync software for the PSP and a Mac, but you don't really need it, as you just copy stuff to the memory stick in the correct folder.

I'm sure there's some stuff on the Wiki I've linked to above about putting games onto a stick, but that's been stopped for the moment with Firmware 2.0 - it's probably that that Sony are more pissed about than the homebrew stuff, as they've always been pretty supportive of the homebrew scene, with Net Yaroze and PS2 Linux.
