Turbocharge Firefox

Not a util or app but a couple of interesting hacks for Firefox.
Plus links to some extensions (you may already know them all).

If you can get the Download Sort extension to work, please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'd like to get it running.

If I still had all my old cassettes, this would be quite cool.

Forget two devices

Why not get a Smartphone, and join the two together!

I've been using the Treo 650 for a while now, and I was using the Treo 600 for a couple of years before that.

I reckon it has to be the finest PDA/Phone out there - it is basically a fully functional Palm, with a phone!

320x320 full colour screen, SD slot (I have a 1Gb card in mine for watching movies), BlueTooth, fairly good camera.. and it runs Palm OS so you can utlise the thousands upon thousands of apps out there already.

I sync my calendar to it, get emails pushed to it, convert Swedish Krona to Pounds, Shillings and Pence on it, use it as a notepad, store encrypted info on it, play some great games, surf the web, access wikipedia.. the list goes on (much like the beat).

Well.. I won't drone on, suffice to say that I love it.. and there's a massive user community online to help out etc.

It's pretty hardy - I keep mine in my back pocket whether I'm sitting down or not.. and I've dropped it many times.

Check out the:

Palm Treo 650 Page

(don't panic about the price.. comes cheap on Orange for example.. I got mine free!)

and the:

Treo Central Page

(great for disussion forums)

Photos and Music

Always going to be a winner to combine these two devices. Pretty much everything in our world combines pictures and music. The competition is hotting up. Check out this beauty...

M:Robe / Olympus

...I want one ;)

A decent phone to go with a PDA

Im looking for a phone to go along with the imminent PDA purchase. I had a T-Mobile MDA Compact and whilst it was working it was all well and good apart from being a PIG to sync with Linux. The battery life is appaling also. Ive come to the conclusion that all that I really need in a phone is Bluetooth and a small size with decent menus. The rest is just fluff. Now I know some of you have some Sony phones at the moment but have you ever had one of these...

Ericsson T39m

Its quite old school but its cheap and ticks all the boxes. Also the fact that it has a greenscale screen will make the battery last about 10 times longer.

Im moving away from the convergence of PDA and phone. Its fundamentally flawed in the fact that when people are telling you stuff over the phone you cant take notes too easily. Also, when youre out in t' disco and there is a big bulge in your pocket... well, that one could go either way :) However, having a phone that plays a huge load of mp3's is nice and practical in the fact that the player knows when to pause and when to resume.

Ohh, its all so confusing. My budget for the phone is going to be a measly £50 and for the PDA about £150.

To CLIE or not to CLIE

I know they dont make them anymore but I really like...

Sony CLIE

...has anyone here got any opinions? Im thinking of buying it. Since its PALM OS its going to be a doddle to sync with just about anything. Like the fact that it has Bluetooth, a CF slot and a 2mp camera as well.

The audio on them is supposed to be better then the Tungsten T5 [which is the competition]

Startup and ARRGH! damn Quicktime again

Ever get pissed off at the amount of shite that gets started after youve installed the usual suspects. This is a real gem...

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Its simple and does the job well... could almost be something that one might see on a *NIX system ;)

Rename ...well kinda

I use something called eags-on

Im sure you can find it on download.com or google for it. Basically a mp3 / batch file renamer with CDDB built into it also.

Picasa

Was talking about this at the weekend.

More of a reminder, as I imagine it's pretty well known. Any edits are non-destructive to the original which is one of the many things I love about this.

Rename

It's not rocket science.
Batch renamer that I've been using for a few years now. Interface understanding isn't instantaneous but once there it's quite powerful.
- modify both suffix and prefix (at the same time if necessary
- suffix: easily add counter, size, date, time, folder name...
- prefix: counter, size, time...

Time for you all to tell me about a better one.

Organic LED's

Remember our chat about really big telly's? Well here's what I was mumbling on about.

Now I don't wish to blow my own trumpet here, but I reckon I have a good instinct when it comes to new tech, I mean, I got my first DVD player in 1997 (bit of a bugger that there were absolutely NO dvd's available over here but what the hell). That's a 100% track record so far.

I think these things will be the next big telly-thing. The nice bit is they'll have a half decent resolution for attaching your PC or rubber-key'd Spectrum to. It's a bit of a shame we won't see them until 2007 mind you.. but I'm prepared to wait (unless of course, my humble CRT dies, in which case I won't be able to resist a plasma in the meantime).

Here's a link to some info on Organic LED's

WinDirStat

I found this just last week.

Nice visual tool to show where all your disk space has gone. Have used a number of similar tools, but I particularly like the way this does things.

PicSizer

Here's another nifty tool we talked about. It will resize any number of pics in a jiffy. You can only resize upto a max res of 1024 but I find that's perfect for the likes of Coppermine.

You can select a source folder and a destination folder, and have the resized pics renamed with your own prefix/suffix (for example _800 or _1024).

Should you select the max width to be 1024, it can scan the folder and resize anything larger to this, or, if you have any pics smaller - it can either leave them alone or enlarge them (not recommended for obvious image loss reasons).

You can of course, resize one-offs..

Remote P800

I'll start the ball rolling.

Excellent app for the P800. Allows control of phone through PC.
Benefits:
- write texts using PC keyboard
- notification of incoming call while phone is silent on cradle
- actually, write anything pretty quickly. e.g. reminders, notes
- screenshots

Welcome

Hello hello.
We've been having a few discussion lately that contains statments such as:
Person 1: "You should try [utility name]. It's great for [something]."
Person 2: "Will do."

This is promptly followed by Person 2 forgetting what it was they were meant to look at.

Perhaps we could post these thoughts here?
Let's see.

I'm new at using this so bear with me if I make some glaring errors.
Cheers
